Basra, by Pete La Roca

Basra is an album released by Blue Note in 1965 and is the debut album of the drummer Pete La Roca. Pete La Roca led only two albums throughout is career and Basra is his first album as the leader. The Quartet is formed by Pete La Roca drum, Joe Henderson tenor saxophone, Steve Kuhn piano and Steve Swallow base. It is a gem of an album that is quite often overlooked.

Basra is among my top 10 jazz albums taking its place alongside the classics such as Lee Morgan’s Sidewinder, Miles Davis Kind of Blue, Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage and Tony Scott’s Music for Zen Meditation (all these albums are great to listen while working by the way). I am especially captivated by the ballad Lazy Afternoon where Joe Henderson’s smooth style is memorable.  Enjoy listening! And if you are curious, you may read more about Pete La Roca and the album here.
